Figure essentielle de la peinture française de la seconde moitié du XXe siècle, Edouard Pignon reste encore pour beaucoup un artiste à découvrir. Pourtant, de l'immédiat après-guerre jusqu'au cours des années 1980, il est l'un des principaux acteurs du débat qui agite la scène artistique, notamment par sa contribution fondamentale à la question de la figuration.

Sa position singulière tient d'ailleurs en ce que son ouvre - ni figurative, ni abstraite - ne se limite pas à une reproduction du visible mais, bien plus, franchit l'obstacle du réel pour refigurer le monde, en donner une image plus juste, tant il lui apparaît comme une évidence que "[sa] seule manière de vivre est d'interroger le monde" en peinture. Édouard Pignon was a French painter of the New School of Paris, born on 12 February 1905 in Bully-les-Mines and died on 14 May 1993 in La Couture-Boussey. A key figure in French painting in the second half of the twentieth century, Edouard Pignon remains for many an artist yet to be discovered.

However, from the immediate post-war years until the 1980s, he was one of the key players in the debate that shook the art scene, particularly through his fundamental contribution to the question of figuration. His singular position lies in the fact that his work - neither figurative nor abstract - is not limited to reproducing the visible but, rather, overcomes the obstacle of reality to refigure the world and give a more accurate image of it, since it seems obvious to him that "[his] only way of living is to question the world" in painting.
