In general, I draw directly on the stone after massaging the general effect in color on a sketch. Then I draw a tinged test from the outline; then, depending on the result, I keep the second color or I change it and on the second test, I look for the effects of the other colors, and so on. I often change a whole first design of the composition, but on the other hand, I get the effects I want and work the stone myself, I can control everything at my leisure. After completing his work on the stone, Berthon drew some tests in black, which he called the first state; then he printed the final state in color. The importance of each edition was generally one hundred prints, on imitation-Japanese, signed by the artist in ink or pencil, and two hundred unsigned prints to which a lithographed title was often added under the image. Some vertical lithographs were signed and decorated with a small lithographed pattern in the large right margin, the plank being printed off-center.
