He studied fine arts in Hamburg and taught there before permanently settling in Paris in 1981, where he became a correspondent of the Academy of Fine Arts. He is academically recognized in Belgium and Germany as well, and his fame extends far beyond Europe. His dreamlike, symbolist style often gives significant importance to the human body, making him a unique and essential painter of the 20th century.
