Born into a family from the Drôme, Cathelin was very attached to this department throughout his life. After studying classically at the high schools of carnot and Janson de sailly à paris, then at the high school of emile loubet à valence, he was a student from 1945 to 1948 at the National Higher School of Decorative Arts in Paris. In the 1950s, he was a professor at the Colarossi Academy for the preparation of the entrance examination to the National School of Decorative Arts.
